Backstreet Boys = TVXQ?

There was a recent article on Allkpop talking about how Backstreet Boys consider THSK as mirror images of themselves.

Frankly, I don’t know how I feel about that. Although I do acknowledge that Backstreet Boys were world hits for the short time they were around before they ran into management problems. I think everyone in the world knew all of the Backstreet Boys and N’sync songs by heart except for people who weren’t really aware of popular trends (aka one of my friends). Their songs are always on karaoke machines in every country that has one. But after their problems,  Backstreet Boys just never got much fame after that. Truthfully, I got their Never Gone CD, but it wasn’t really as great as their hit songs from before.

DBSK on the other hand, have been around for 6 years and still going strong. Not only that but they’ve released 8 albums, 4 of which were in a foreign language, Japanese. They’ve also gotten fluent enough in Japanese that they can speak comfortably and go to talk shows without needing a translator. Also, speaking of languages, have you noticed that it’s really only Asian singers that sing in multiple languages well? (I do NOT count Avril Lavigne’s song “Girlfriend”. That was so horrible. Sure, technically there were lines in it that were in Chinese/other foreign languages but I have to say, that she butchered the language and those versions should just die).

Anyway, it’s like what people say: If you know three languages, you’re trilingual. If you know two languages, you’re bilingual. If you know one language, you’re American.

On another note, did I ever mention that DBSK sings better than Backstreet Boys live? I remember watching a recent Backstreet Boys Live on Domoto Kyoudai, I was horrified, especially the parts when they sang together. You would think that they would sound better singing together, but it actually ruined my image of Backstreet Boys. I understand that they are old now and not as active as when they were young, but there are old singers out there that can still sing. Judge for yourself. *Shudders*

Here’s the official cd version of the song, in case the live made you cringe.

Anyway, despite the difference in age, looks, singing and dancing skills, there is one area where Backstreet Boys triumph over DBSK and that is that DBSK hasn’t had world tours like Backstreet Boys, but rather just Asia Tours. I’m sure they’ll be successful though considering that they have the largest fanclub in the world (It’s in the Guiness World Records).Especially since there are tons of youtube videos floating around of people from different parts of the world singing DBSK’s songs. Other than that reason, I can’t really think of another one that Backstreet Boys are better at than DBSK.

Yes, you can argue that I’m taking Backstreet Boys’ comment about DBSK wrong, and that they really meant the similarities about being world stars when Backstreet Boys were young and popular. On another hand, do you think Backstreet Boys actually meant the problems with DBSK and SM Entertainment when they said “I remember how TVXQ reminded us of who we used to be“? Somehow I doubt Backstreet Boys keeps up with DBSK… although who knows? If people across the world knows of DBSK, maybe Backstreet Boys do too.

How weird would that be.
